Courtlands Independent Special School

Food for Thought

At Courtlands, our commitment to healthy eating is central to our mission of promoting well-being, independence, and sustainable living for all our students. As a special school, we recognize how vital nutrition is to both the physical and emotional development of our young people. A healthy, balanced diet supports improved concentration, behaviour, and energy, helping students learn, grow, and thrive.

To ensure the best nutritional support, the school works closely with a nutritionist who advises our in-house cook on creating balanced, nutritious meals. We also provide expert guidance and advice to parents through workshops and share recipes to help families make healthy, sustainable food choices at home.

Our focus on healthy eating aligns with our pursuit of the Eco-Schools Award, which encourages action in health, sustainability, and community involvement. By promoting nutritious, sustainable food choices, teaching cooking skills with fresh ingredients, and reducing food waste, we not only enhance student outcomes but also contribute to caring for the environment.

Through school gardens, healthy eating projects, and food education activities, our students learn where their food comes from, how to make informed choices, and why looking after their health and the planet matters. These hands-on experiences nurture their independence and foster a deeper understanding of their role in a sustainable world.

We are proud to be working towards the Eco-Schools Award, reflecting our holistic approach to education, one that values health, inclusion, and environmental responsibility in all we do.
